Western Cape Child Commissioner says she’s appalled by the ongoing murder of children in the province.
Christina Nomdo’s comments follow the release of statistics that 185 young people were killed in 2021.
Out of 1,421 child deaths recorded, 486 were of natural causes, 380 accidents and 370 are still being probed.
Nomdo says that in too many cases, childhood in the country is characterised by violence.
She says government and communities need to work together to find solutions.
“ We must take the next step and put resources into preventing child deaths. We need to turn the tide on violence and children’s vulnerability. We need to make sure childhoods are safer, we must by making children’s homes and communities safe spaces for them to play, live and thrive”.
