The number of people who contracted the coronavirus in South Africa has surpassed the 300,000 mark.

The Department of Health says 12,747 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hour cycle, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 311 049.

Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize says 107 more people have succumbed to the virus on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 4,453

Of the new fatalities, 41 were confirmed in Gauteng, 38 in the Western Cape, 12 in the Eastern Cape, 12 in North West and 4 in KwaZulu Natal.

The department says 160 693 people have recovered from the virus.

This means that there’re 145,903 active cases in South Africa.
