The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the Western Cape, has passed the 5,000 mark.

There are currently 5,168 cases,  but of those cases, 1,678 people have recovered bringing the total of active cases to 3490.

Sadly, 98 people have died.

The number of people hospitalised in the province stands at 183, with 68 patients in ICU.

Over the weekend Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize confirmed that additional support and resources will be deployed to the province to support local teams.

These include epidemiologists and some of the Cuban doctors who’re currently in South Africa.

Meanwhile, more than 10,000 confirmed cases have been recorded in the country, with 4,173 recoveries and 194 deaths.
