Very sad news for thespians and theatre lovers as The Fugard announces that they are closing their doors for good. An icon that housed many well known and international shows, in its beautiful and intimate setting.

The Fugard decided to close a year ago, not permanently, due to Covid-19. Founder, producer and benefactor Eric Abraham, made the announcement on the website that its for the best that they do not reopen it again.

The theatre will be handed back to the owner of the freehold of the building – the board of The District 6 Museum, read a statement.

The Fugard was named after one of South Africa’s most well known playwrights, Athol Fugard. The theatre will always be remembered with its cute and quaint bar area, smiling warm faces greeting you, warm koeksisters and of course the most INCREDIBLE productions SA has ever seen.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the employees, actors and actresses affected by the closing down of The Fugard, may we remember the good times, always.
