The number of people who succumbed to Covid-19 in South Africa has surpassed the 7,000 mark.

A total of 298 Covid-19 related deaths were confirmed on Monday, bringing death toll to 7,067.

Of the new fatalities, 91 were recorded in the Free State, 77 from the Eastern Cape, 61 from Gauteng, 36 from the Western Cape, 13 from Mpumalanga, 11 from North West and 9 from KwaZulu Natal.

The Health Department says a total of 7,096 new infections were confirmed in the past 24 hour period.

Authorities say the cumulative of confirmed cases stand at 452 529.

Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize said 274 925 people have recovered, which translates to a recovery rate of 61%.

South Africa currently has 170 537 active cases.

Meanwhile the Western Cape has 12,688 active cases and 2,897 people have died.
