Western Cape Premier Alan Winde is appealing citizens to protect themselves during the festive season in order to protect healthcare-workers.
The health department has announced that the health system is under pressure.
This is due to the sharp increase in Covid-19 admissions at hospitals, as well as other trauma cases.
The province has seen a spike in cases and deaths since last month.
Currently there’re more than 34,600 active cases and more than 5,500 people have died.
Winde says the workers have been hard at work for a long time.
“Our health workers, front line workers, they have been at it for the last eight months. They have taken us through the first wave and now we are in the second wave. Once again those frontline – health workers are in the thick of things right now. What they need us to do is to do much better than we are doing right now. We have to play our part even stronger that we have ever before”.
