The number of people who contracted the coronavirus in South Africa has surpassed the 100,000 mark.

The Department of Health says 4,288 new cases were recorded in the past 24 hours.

Currently there’re 101,590 cases in the country.

Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize says 61 more people have succumbed to the virus, bringing the death toll to 1,991.

Of the new fatalities, 39 were recorded in the Western Cape, 18 in the Eastern Cape, 3 in KwaZulu Natal, and 1 from Limpopo.

The department says 53,444 people have recovered from the virus.

This means that there’re 46,155 active cases in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape which remains the epicentre of the pandemic, has 13,969 active case and 1,424 people have died.
