The country has been placed back on Covid-19 Alert level 2 from Monday, the 31st of May.
President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement in an address to the nation on Sunday night.
The announcement wasn’t unexpected – with the Free State, Northern Cape, North West and Gauteng all now in a third wave of infections.
The new restrictions see the curfew running from 23h00 until 04h00 and gatherings limited to 100 people indoors.
Restaurants and bars will need to close at ten to allow staff to get home – but there are no other special restrictions on alcohol sales.
Ramaphosa says there’s been a sustained increase in new cases, hospitalisations, and positivity rates.
“Further restrictions are necessary to ensure that health facilities are not overwhelmed and that lives that could be saved are not lost. Delaying the spread of the virus is especially important now to allow as many people as possible to be vaccinated before the third wave reaches its peak”.
