Our weekly good news story. This week we speak about the Community Philharmonic Orchestra. CEO of the Orchestra, Desmond Solomon joins us in studio….
The Community Philharmonic Orchestra is a non profit company that offers an opportunity to amateur musicians to play alongside and share a stage with professional musicians. It is envisaged that we have an orchestra consisting of at least 50% amateur musicians at all times during performances.
This program, is aimed at mentoring and tutoring at various levels within the orchestra and include life skills orientation. The amateur musicians come from all communities within the Western Cape, with diversity as its envisaged attribute and under normal circumstances would not have an opportunity to share in such an event.
Although the orchestra has played together on various platforms for a few years, it was only registered in April this year.
This initiative is not only directed at players but also aspiring orchestral conductors as they also need to get the opportunity to develop and experience these platforms. So, for every concert, there will be an aspiring conductor sharing the stage with the main conductor.
The 4 cornerstones of the orchestra are Opportunity, Development, Education and Entertainment.
