The beer industry is threatening to go to court to challenge government’s decision to ban the sale of alcohol.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the prohibition on the sale of alcohol for a period of 14 days from yesterday.
He says these restrictions will help protect the health system as the number of COVID-19 infections continue to rise.
The Beer Association of South Africa is now seeking legal advice on the decision.
CEO Patricia Pillay says this is in the interest of protecting jobs and livelihoods.
“As others have pointed out, there is a vaccine against COVID-19, but not against poverty. The rise in infections is a direct result of large gatherings, a lack of social distancing and the failure to wear masks – not alcohol”.
