Teacher unions have welcomed the decision to close both public and private schools, amid the Covid-19 third wave.
The schools will shut down tomorrow and are scheduled to re-open on the 19th of July.
Learners were scheduled to be on the winter-break between the 9th and 26th of July.
But, because of the rapid spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant in South Africa, the decision was taken to close the schools earlier.
Sadtu spokesperson Nomusa Cembi, says they don’t believe the decision to close the schools early will have an impact on learners.
Meanwhile, Naptosa executive director, Basil Manuel, says they want the schools to be re-opened on 29th of next month. This because the third wave might not have reached all areas during that time.
