South Africa has recorded 173 more covid19-related deaths, bringing the national toll to 3,199.

The Health department says of the new fatalities, 71 were in Gauteng, 40 in the Western Cape, 29 in the Eastern Cape, 21 in KwaZulu Natal, 10 in Free State, and 2 in the Northern Cape.

A total of 8,773 new infections were confirmed in the past 24 hour period.

The country’s cumulative coronavirus cases stand at 196 750.

But Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says 93,135 people have beaten the virus so far.

This means that the country has 100 236 active cases.

Meanwhile the Western Cape has 16,293 active cases and 2,052 people have succumbed to the virus.
