South Africa will stay on Lockdown Level 1, but the number of people allowed at religious gatherings has been increased.
President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement in an address to the nation last night.
He says that the Easter weekend is a time of spiritual significance, and attending religious services is important to millions of Christians.
The Jewish community is also currently celebrating Passover, and Muslims are about to start the Holy month of Ramadan.
Ramaphosa says religious leaders have provided details of how they’ll handle large crowds safely.
As a result, the number of people allowed at religious gatherings will be more than doubled.
“Religious gatherings over this period will be restricted to a total number of 250 people indoors and 500 outdoors. This is the increase of the number we have currently. Where the venue is too small to accommodate these numbers with appropriate social distancing, then no more than 50 per cent of the capacity of the venue may be used. People must go home and not sleep over after services”.
