President Cyril Ramaphosa says the coronavirus pandemic requires an economic response equal to the scale of the disruption it is causing.

On Tuesday night, Ramaphosa announced a R500 billion plan to minimise the impact of Covid-19.

A key component of the massive stimulus package is an increase in social grant payments.

He announced a temporary 6-month coronavirus grant package with a total price tag of R50 billion.

Existing grant recipients will receive top-ups on their current monthly amounts:

“This means that child support grant beneficiaries will receive an extra R300 in May and from June to October they will receive an additional R500 each month. All other grant beneficiaries will receive an extra R250 per month for the next six months”.

President Ramaphosa added that a special Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant of R350 a month for the next 6 months, will be paid to individuals who are now unemployed and do not receive any other form of social grant or UIF payment.
