Western Cape Premier Alan Winde will host a briefing on the state of safety in the Cape on Tuesday.
He’s set to be joined by Transport MEC, Daylin Mitchell, Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz and the province’s police commissioner, Thembisile Patekile.
They’re set to unpack the recent wave of deadly gun violence engulfing both the taxi and bus industries.
Meanwhile the province’s legislature has thanked local and national government for working closely to address the situation.
The chairperson of the standing committee on Transport committee, Ricardo Mackenzie said, “We commend both MEC Daylin Mitchell and Minister Fikile Mbalula for meeting with the stakeholders in the taxi industry since Friday, following the continual violence which has plagued this sector since the beginning of the year. We also support MEC Mitchell’s consideration in using Section 91 of the National Land Transport Act to close specific taxi ranks and routes which have seen increased prevalence of violence”.
