When the government bans the sale of alcohol, the nation’s home brewers caused another big spike in the cost of pineapples. On Monday July 13, the morning after the president’s shock announcement, that price shot up to R120. And by last Friday it was around R200. The increase in the demand for pineapples is linked to the public using pineapples to make home-brewed pineapple beer during the alcohol sale prohibition. Pineapples are South Africa’s go-to ingredient to make a beer tasting drink, which has lots of sugar. The pineapple skin is packed with yeast which make it easy to ferment for that perfect bubbly drink.
