Remember that song? The famous Zol song featuring Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, well it would appear that the words of the song are actually coming true. She said in a statement at the beginning of the cigarette ban, that sharing a ‘zol’ will spread the Coronavirus, and she was absolutely right.
Researchers from the University of Cape Town proved that the ban has increased the sharing of cigarettes as illegal cigarettes have become ridiculously expensive. A study showed that sharing cigarettes increased from 1.7% pre-lockdown to 8.9% during lockdown. The survey also showed that 93% of smokers are still purchasing illegal cigarettes at various corner shops and contacts.
Covid-19 is passed on by spreading saliva droplets, so sharing cigarettes or anything for that matter is an absolute no-go!
