Western Cape Education MEC, Debbie Schäfer, says she’s extremely proud of the Class of 2020 for achieving Matric, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
On Monday, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, released the country’s pass rate, which dropped to 76.2%.
The Free State was announced as the best province in the country, followed by Gauteng, and the Western Cape in third place.
The province’s rate declined by 2.4% to 79.9%.
However it is the lowest drop, compared with the eight other provinces.
Schäfer says despite the drop, there are achievements to be proud of.
“The number and percentage of bachelor’s passes has increased, to our highest level ever, of 43.8%, 22 634 of the 51 633 candidates that wrote in the Western Cape achieved a Bachelor pass. There is also good news on the Mathematics front, with increases in both the Mathematics (70.8%) and Mathematical Literacy (82.9%) pass rates, as well the Western Cape boasting the top two candidates in Mathematics nationally for the second year in a row”
