Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer has again applauded the Class of 2020 for completing matric amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, her department held a National Senior Certificate Awards ceremony at the Premier’s Residence, in Leeuwenhof.

This was to celebrate the best learners for last year’s exams.

A number of local pupils received top achievers’ awards from the department of Basic Education Department.

The Western Cape’s pass rate declined by 2.4% to 79.9%.

However, Schäfer says she’s proud of the learners.

“Yes, our pass rate did decrease and we fully expected this given what a disrupted year we had, yet this was the smallest decline seen by any province in the country, demonstrating our ability to limit the fallout from the pandemic. And despite the challenges, we still saw some wonderful improvement in areas.   I am very proud of that, and believe we all should be”.
