Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer says the majority of schools across the province re-opened yesterday.

According to her, over 98 percent of them took in learners as scheduled.

Of the remainder, she maintains that only a few stayed closed in protest.

Others had confirmed Covid-19 cases, or fell victim to the confusion created by national Education Minister Angie Motsekga.

Schäffer says actual schooling will resume this week, and still more schools will re-open on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, opposition parties in the legislature have slammed the provincial education department’s decision to re-open schools yesterday.

The ANC’s Sayed Khaled says the schools that have re-opened must shut down in solidarity with those that remain closed.

The EFF’s Melikhaya Xego says the department could have used this week to ensure that all schools are ready
