Learner attendance at Western Cape schools has been increasing gradually since schools resumed in a phased approach in June 2020.

The provincial Education department says initially attendance figures for Grade 7 stood at 33% and 12 learners stood at 44.4%.

It now stands at 77% and percent, 88% respectively.

The rate for grade 11 learners who returned to schools in July, dropped from 59.7% to 53.1%.

These figures are for physical attendance at school at least once a week.

They also exclude learners who are studying from home.

Education MEC, Debbie Schäfer, says the attendance isn’t bad at all….

” A lot of learners are not at school, a lot of them are busy doing work from home, because they’ve been given permission to stay home. Anyone given a permission to stay home, is required to do work from home, and parents have to undertake to get work from the school, to ensure learners do their work”.
