District Six land claimants have welcomed interventions to prevent an illegal land invasion in the area.
Last week, the City of Cape Town was granted a court interdict against people trying to claim a site earmarked for restitution.
The City approached the courts, after it was informed that a group of people intend to occupy parts of the land.
The District Six Working Committee says it has engaged with some of those who erected structures close to the site.
It’s understood that some of them have been waiting decades for RDP homes – and some are even former residents of District 6.
The committee’s Karen Breytenbach, says they feel for those people.
But Breytenbach is also insistent that they don’t want further delays for moving successful claimants to their new homes.
“Our claimants, who have fought for years for their restitution, are right at the point of return – we cannot and will not allow their determination to be derailed now. We commend the City of Cape Town for attempting to protect the rights of rightful beneficiaries”.
