Day 1 – It’s hard to believe that 365 days has passed since our last journey but here we are, once again ready to make a difference, no matter how small, in the lives of youth around the Western Cape. Day one of our journey took place in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain. The team were made of a community upliftment project called, Overflow. The project runs several programs which aim to provide positive behaviours in the lives of the youth in the area. Everything from sporting programs to feeding schemes are conducted by the small team at Overflow and speaks to the “each one teach one” ethos that exists within the community. The project is self-funded but with the help of our Heart family, the money raised and provisions donated will keep the project running for months to come.

The project’s humble beginnings can be found in the home of Aunty Kathy, who is affectionately known as Ma. Ma Kathy and her daughter Jean saw a need in their community as many of of the children in community would go to sleep with an empty stomach. With haste and urgency, they set up their first soup kitchen and the rest as they say is history.

The philosophy of giving was taught early on for the pair and by projecting love in the universe it has returned in kind. The Heart FM team were honoured to provide Ma Kathy with car port to protect her from the rain and harsh weather she often has to face when feeding the community of Rocklands. It also provides her with an opportunity to operate more efficiently. This in tandem with a Spar voucher to the value of R2000 ensures the project will remain sustainable for longer to serve the beautiful people of the Rocklands community.
