Yesterday morning we spoke to the president of the society for psychiatry about the plight of mental health and facilities during this crisis. This morning we continue the conversation on mental health and the importance of being mindful of it during this time.
As the COVID-19 response shuts down most options for access to mental health care services in SA, the Counselling Hub recognized the critical need to still be available to its low-income community and were determined not to separate clients from their counsellors at such a stressful time. They managed to pivot to a tele-counselling service and now have more than 30 volunteer counsellors delivering services through innovative tele-counselling to over 110 patients daily. Prior to the COVID-crisis, they charged R50.00 per session, but now because of the dire economic situation for many people, they have become donation-based.
Co-founder of the Counselling Hub, Romi Kaplan, joins us on the line…
