The City of Cape Town is on a mission to reboot the tourism industry and make the Mother City an attractive tourist destination post-Covid-19. The travel and tourism sector is facing more than 100 million jobs losses globally due to the pandemic, according to the latest research by the World Travel and Tourism Council.

How important is the travel and tourism sector to Cape Town’s economy?

Tourism is and will remain a key industry in our City and it is central to our economic recovery. According to the latest available statistics from Statistics South Africa, tourism added roughly R18 billion to our local economy and directly supported just over 113 000 jobs in 2018, showing just how critical this sector is for Cape Town and our residents. There are three phases in the City’s COVID-19 tourism action plan, including Containment, Adjustment and Recovery.
