Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the increase in the unemployment rate in South Africa is cause for concern.

600 060 jobs were lost from the second to the third quarter of 2021.

This means official unemployment has increased from 34.4% to 34.9%.

This is the highest number since the Quarterly Labour Force Survey was started in 2008.

Hill-Lewis says conditions for meaningful, faster economic growth in Cape Town must be created.

“We are determined, and even more so today, to grow the Cape Town economy faster so that we can lift more people out of poverty over time. Everything we do in government will be focused on this goal, and measured against this outcome”.
