There’s been another mass killing in Khayelitsha. Police say six people were shot and killed in the Enkanini Informal settlement on Sunday.
The killings come less than a week after five people were killed in a single incident in the nearby Endlovini informal settlement – and just three days after police minister, Bheki Cele, visited the area and promised to increase policing to end the murders. It wasn’t the only shooting in Khayelitsha this weekend. Two people have been arrested after the passenger in an e-hailing vehicle was shot and killed during an attempted hijacking in Makhaza on Saturday.
Police nearby were alerted to that crime, and a shootout saw the suspects wounded – and subsequently arrested.
In Sunday’s incident, multiple gunshots were reported to police just after 16h00. When they arrived, they found the bodies of five victims strewn across two scenes about 200 metres apart.
A sixth person had also been injured – but was declared dead on arrival at a medical facility.
The police’s Novela Potelwa says, “two woman and four men were shot and killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen. All six victims are estimated to be between the ages of 22 to 27.”
