The Western Cape Education department says a learner caught on camera bullying a classmate and setting her hair alight has been suspended from Belgravia High School.
The disturbing video has been circulating on social media this week.
It shows the boy taunting the girl and then moments later, taking a lighter and setting her hair alight.
WCED Spokesperson, Millicent Merton, says the school took swift action.
“The school immediately investigated and took action when the incident occurred. The learner was suspended as a precautionary measure pending a disciplinary hearing. The school provided counselling and therapeutic support to the victim. The Representative Council of Learners (RCL) will embark on an anti-bullying campaign at the school”.
