The number of people who succumbed to Covid-19 in South Africa has surpassed the 12,000 mark.

More than 200 deaths were confirmed on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 12,264.

“Regrettably we report a further 282 Covid-19 related deaths – 89 from Gauteng, 66 from the Eastern Cape, 57 from KwaZulu-Natal, 34 from the Western Cape, 20 from North West, 13 from the Free State and 3 from the Northern Cape”.

The Health Department says a total of 2,258 new infections were recorded over the past 24 hour cycle.

Authorities say the cumulative of confirmed cases stand at 592 144.

Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize said 485 468 people have recovered, which translates to a recovery rate of 82%.

South Africa currently has 94 412 active cases.
