Edcon, have confirmed that they’ve sent 22 000 retrenchment letters to staff across the country working in their various stores. A statement issued, blames Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown. It has left many staff members unemployed and stressed about the future. However, there has been acknowledgment that there were many struggles for business long before the Coronavirus hit.
“Poor sales, the recession in the South African economy exacerbated by frequent load-shedding disrupting purchasing patterns, and the advent of COVID-19 which resulted in the government implementing measures including the initial 45-day hard lockdown period which prohibited trading of non-essential products.”
