The Western Cape Education Department says 1.2 Million meals have been served to hungry learners in the province during May.

This was thanks to the department’s emergency school feeding programme.

Due to the nationwide lockdown, schools were forced to close and that meant the school feeding programmes – on which so many children depended on for a daily meal – stopped as well.

The department responded to the pleas from communities to get these programmes up and running again.

The WCED’s Bronagh Hammond said that they couldn’t have done it without the help of various volunteers and NGO’s.
