Human Settlements Mayoral Committee Member, Malusi Booi, has refuted claims that they’re not dealing with the housing crisis with enough urgency.

Booi was responding to comments made by housing activists about the municipality’s failure to deliver houses in the inner city.

He’s blaming the activists for the ongoing delays.

“We have released some of the land parcels now, and also in this coming council on the 28th of July we’ll be releasing two other land parcels. They are the ones who are hindering progress because they continue to hijack our buildings – as you would’ve seen in Woodstock and Helen Bowden Hospital.”

However, members of the activist group, Reclaim the City, say they will continue to inhabit vacant buildings in the inner city if the metro fails to provide houses.

The group’s Karen Hendricks says there’s enough land for social housing.
