The Western Cape Education Department says high rates of absenteeism have been recorded.

But, the schools remain open.

The motive behind the tensions between local gangs and taxi drivers is unknown.

However, the murder of an alleged gang leader in Brackenfell earlier this year, is thought to have contributed.
