Learning institutions should be a safe haven for children.
However, the first quarter crime statistics show that schools remain dangerous and violent places for children.
There’ve been numerous rape cases reported at various education facilities in the Western Cape.
These attacks took place between April and June 2023.
Not all instances of sexual violence are reported so therefore the stats could be much higher.
Sexual assaults have also been reported at daycare facilities, which involved infants.
Education spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said, “We have received five alleged cases since the start of the school year. The department reports all sexual misconduct cases to SAPS. Sexual harassment, sexual assault, and all forms of abuse are simply not tolerated in the Western Cape Education Department and action will be taken. All teachers and learners can report any form of abuse to the Safe Schools Hotline on 0800 45 46 47 for immediate assistance”.
