The University of the Western Cape (UWC) student accused of stabbing his wife, has been referred for mental evaluation.

Ntembeko Myalo appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

He was examined by a surgeon that recommended he be sent for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation at the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.

Last week, he provisionally abandoned his bail application.

He was assaulted by a group of students, following his alleged attack on the young woman.

The accused then sustained head injuries.

Myalo, was seen in a video stabbing the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) student at a private student residence in Belhar on Saturday the 11th of November.

Following the incident, UWC suspended Myalo.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Eric Ntabazalila said, “A District Surgeon examined Myalo this morning and recommended for him be sent for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital. He will remain in custody while waiting for a space at the facility. He will attend court every 30 days until a report from the hospital is available to the court”.
