A R100,000 reward is up for grabs for information that could lead to the arrests of the criminals who killed two private security guards.
The City believes extortionists shot and killed the two guards in Phola Park in Philippi on Tuesday afternoon, while they were escorting municipal workers attending to a sewer pipe repair.
The municipality says the armed guards drove to the site in their own company vehicle, while a City vehicle transported 5 municipal workers.
When they arrived – the teams disembarked to gather tools and inspect the pipe.
While they were busy, two armed men approached the municipal vehicle and another 2 headed to the toilet block – where multiple shots were fired.
Both guards died.
A female City employee was also injured from a hard fall.
Water and Sanitation Mayco member, Zaahid Badroodien, says various City services are being impacted by criminal attacks in parts of Philippi.
“There’s not a day goes by that the staff that works in the volatile areas aren’t targets. There has been an increasing number of attacks on our staff while they’re working on duty, especially in our informal settlements. This has led to the City spending over R8,5 million for private security escorts in the 2023/24 financial year alone”.
