The search for a canoeist who apparently drowned in the Breede River near Swellendam will resume today.
The victim is believed to be Giel Van Deventer.
It’s understood that two people were rowing when they were caught in stormy conditions on Saturday.
After their canoe capsized, one of them managed to swim to the river bank.
However, his 72-year-old rowing partner disappeared under the water.
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said, “A search and rescue operation was launched following the disappearance of a canoeist on the Breede River near Swellendam just before 15:00 on Saturday. Police divers from the Boland and Southern Cape regions were dispatched to the scene and immediately commenced with the search. Later, the search and rescue operation had to be halted due to poor lighting. This search and rescue operation resumed this morning and the operation continues today”.
