Correctional Services National Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale says they hope to overhaul the parole system within the first two years of this new administration.

Department officials appeared before parliament’s portfolio committee on Correctional Services, on Tuesday.

The officials were cornered about the system’s failures.

In the Western Cape, the parole board came under fire from residents after some parolees killed children.

In one such case, Moyhdian Pangkaeker was released in 2013.

After he came out, he raped and murdered Tazné van Wyk, in 2020.

Then in July, the parole board overturned the decision to release former policeman, and convicted murderer Marius van der Westhuizen on parole, following an outcry from the community.

He shot and killed his three children in 2006.

Thobakgale says they’re in the process of providing an update to their political principals and then Cabinet.
