A Delft community has been left angered after a teenage girl was killed in the crossfire of rival gangs.

Fifteen-year-old Aqeelah Schroeder was apparently walking to a shop in The Hague on Women’s Day, when she was hit by a stray bullet.

The Delft Community Policing Forum’s Reginald Maart says the area remains tense.

Ward councilor, Michelle Adonis, says the incident has been a wake-up call.

She says it’s now up to the community to preserve its own social, mental and spiritual well-being.

“The community is in mourning, we are frustrated, we are angry.”

Adonis added that the community looks up to the authorities who try to protect them, but despite that, there is systemic failure.

Adonis says the community, with the help of other stakeholders, needs to turn Delft around.
