Taxi commuters will have to dig deeper into their pockets as fares increase in the wake of major fuel price hikes which came into effect on Wednesday.
Taxi mother body Santanco in the Western Cape says their members are busy deliberating on the matter – but a price hike is a virtual certainty.
The council says taxi fares will go up by between R1 and R5 for local trips.
And it’s inevitable that there will be increases for long distance trips as well.
All taxi associations have until next week Tuesday the 7th of June to share their views, after which an announcement will be made.
Santaco provincial chairperson, Mandla Hermanus says they don’t have a choice.
“Because we are not subsidised and the government is not stepping in to assist the taxi industry, then we are forced to pass on these costs to our passengers, who in the main are poor and can’t afford to have all their salaries consumed by travelling expense”.
