The Swartland Municipality says it’s satisfied with the interim findings of the investigation into the failure of three dams on the Dassenberg Farm.
The report, by the Water and Sanitation Department, has revealed that the four dams had been built illegally, as no licences have been issued to build them.
It’s understood that the four dams on the property had been built by the owners of Dassenberg Plaas and Agrico Machinery between 1960 and 2005.
An earlier report from the Water and Sanitation Minister had erroneously stated that the dams had been constructed from the 1950s.
The companies are, now, set to be taken to task for contravening the National Water Act, and could be liable to fork out for damages.
The municipality’s Mart-Marié Haasbroek says while they’re still considering the report, local authorities are doing all they can to safeguard residents.
