An ANC member in the Western Cape legislature – who faces fraud and corruption charges – has been released on a warning.

A warrant of arrest was issued for Danville Smith after he failed to appear in a Bellville court.

The charges relate to Mandela Day celebrations in 2016.

Smith, a former Cederberg Councillor, and his co-accused, Peter Blackenberg, are alleged to have been responsible for ensuring food parcels were delivered on the day – but that never happened.

The Hawks’ Zinzi Hani says they should appear in court next week.

“Danville Smith handed himself over to the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Team on Thursday 25 August 2022, after failing to appear in court on the 16th August 2022. He’s expected to appear along with his co-accused, in the same court on Monday 5 September 2022, for legal representation.”
