The State says it’s confident that Tazne van Wyk’s murderer will be slapped with a life prison sentence.
Closing arguments were delivered in sentencing proceedings in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.
The defence pleaded with the court to deviate from prescribed minimum sentences, especially on the sexual and murder charges.
This is to show mercy particularly as the man’s age suggests he’d spend all the last years of his life in prison.
But the State says those circumstances are not compelling at all.
The 8 year old Elsies River child’s killer will be sentenced on the 14th of February 2023.
He abducted, raped and killed her in 2020.
The 59 year old man has also been convicted – of a string of other sex-related crimes.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says they’re certain that the court won’t be lenient.
“We strongly argued even before the last day that there’re charges that have prescribed minimum charges, and strongly that he must be given life in prison. We are also confident that we will get more than one life sentence. But as you know that the Correctional Services Act whatever other sentences that have been handed down will go together with the life term”.
