Eskom has announced that Stage 4 power cuts will be in place until 05:00 on Thursday morning.

The ailing power utility ramped up power cuts at 10:00 on Tuesday, noting that it’s due to the sudden tripping of three generation units at the Kendal power station.

The past week has been a disastrous one for Eskom after 42 of its units tripped at various times.

However, it has ruled out the possibility of sabotage.

At the same time, Eskom has confirmed that repairs are still underway to return Koeberg’s Unit 2 to service.

Chief Operating Officer, Jan Oberholzer, says it’s been more than a week since the challenging unit had tripped.

The power utility says the unit tripped from full power during routine testing of the control rod.

But according to Eskom, such incidents are expected.

Oberholzer says local officials and the contractor – French company, Framatome – are still doing assessments.
