SASSA and the Social Development department dodged parliament on Wednesday.

They were meant to respond to the finding of two students, around widespread fraud in the Social Relief of Distress Grant applications.

Joel Cedras and Veer Gosai broke this scam on Heart Breakfast some two weeks ago.

Since then, the story has gained traction and parliament’s attention.

But when government’s turn came to respond, Minister Sisisi Tolashe blocked them because it’s been discovered that the alarm was sounded as early as September last year…and that SASSA failed to act for some time.

Tolashe is not impressed.

She’s asked Parliament to give them a month to investigate and report back….

Meanwhile, Cedras and Gosai, are appealing to government to join hands with them.

The 19-year-olds emphasise that they’re ordinary citizens, who are concerned about the future of South Africans who depend on the grant.
