Police have launched an investigation after two people died in two separate shack fires in Cape Town over the weekend.

In the first incident in Phillipi, a single informal structure was destroyed at Marcus Garvey’s informal settlement, and one man sustained fatal burn wounds.

The spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, Jermaine Carelse, says another person died in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein on Sunday.

“Crews responded at about 03h25 to a structure alight at Didi Street, Scottsdene. They arrived on the scene and managed to quickly extinguish the blaze and found the body of a man who sustained fatal wounds under the debris. The causes of both these fires are unknown”, said Carelse.
