The City of Cape Town says SASSA and the Gift of the Givers are helping Langa residents recover from the weekend’s devastating fire.

The two organisations are supporting the Joe Slovo informal settlement with humanitarian relief.

That support will include food and toiletries.

The City has completed its registration of victims, and says that 767 residents were affected by the blaze.

That’s substantially lower than initial estimates.

Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, says the City will supply standpipes for water and fix the damaged toilets.

“Solid Waste Management will conduct a cleaning process. The scene up until this moment remains tense. Please keep all of those affected in your prayers at this difficult time – as we continue to support the community with the necessary services that they require.”
