South Africa’s murder rate has again increased in the first quarter of this year.

6 289 people have been killed in South Africa between January and March 2023.

This is an increase of 3.4% compared to the same period in 2022.

Police Minister Bheki Cele and the police management submitted the crime stats report to Parliament on Tuesday.

Out of the nine provinces, increases were reported in six of them.

The North West recorded the highest number of murders, followed by Mpumalanga.

Worth noting is that the Western Cape has seen a decrease of 14. 1% in the number of murders, with 872 people killed in the first three months of the year.

This is the highest decrease in the country.

Umlazi in the South-West of Durban remains the murder capital.

And the most frequently used weapon is a firearm.

During this period, there was a 7.9% rise in the murder of women, while child killings dropped by 19.9%
