The Western Cape Mobility Department says it respects Santaco’s decision not to participate in Tuesday’s mini-bus taxi task team meeting.

The taxi mother body requested that the meeting be postponed after their taxis were impounded over the weekend.

Santaco’s decision comes after Cape Town traffic officials impounded 13 taxis over the weekend.

More than a week ago, taxi operators pulled out of the same meeting, in protest against impoundments.

The forum was established to discuss issues related to the public transport system in the City.

Santaco requested Tuesday’s meeting be postponed so it can engage with its members.

It’s clear that Santaco and the City are not on the same page about when taxis can be impounded.

But there’s also disagreement within the taxi industry.

The provincial department says it will propose a new date for the task team to sit.

The province says it is committed to prioritising this work and that it is ready to address the challenges identified by the industry.
