The taxi industry is facing criticism from within its own ranks over a failure to engage Government on fuel prices.

A spokesperson for taxi drivers accuses taxi mother body, SANTACO, of deliberately dragging its feet.

The body represents taxi owners, and has said it won’t mobilize for now as it’s still holding talks with Government and stakeholders.

Taxi fares have been raised dramatically in response to rapidly climbing petrol prices.

But drivers say they see no benefit from this.

Representative, Clerment Doncabe, says taxi drivers are forced to behave recklessly to meet daily profit targets set by their employers.

“SANTACO is dragging their feet because there is nothing much that is touching them. That’s the reason they are not rushing, or putting pressure to government to make things happen – because they have no pressure. People that are having pressure and problems are the taxi workers.”
